This 2009 Audi A4 with a 2.0 turbo engine had excessive oil consumption and black smoke coming from the tailpipe at 129,000 miles. After confirming the oil consumption and checking the crankcase vent valve it was determined that the pistons and rings must be replaced. This is a common problem on all early Audi TFSI engines with engine code CAEB. Audi extended the warranty to 80,000 miles on some cars. The engine must be removed and new pistons and rings must be installed. Some early engines also need new connecting rods because the piston update used rods with a smaller wrist pin. In this case, the customer drove the vehicle for quite a while with the oil consumption issues and a catalytic converter was also needed.
